Divine Retribution deals damage to a creature or planeswalker equal to the number of creatures that attacked you last combat — a conditional Shock that scales into a genuine threat removal spell in multiplayer. It earns a slot only in decks that actively want to be attacked, not as a generically good removal piece.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Divine Retribution earns its keep in pillowfort and group hug shells where opponents are attacking you by design — the more attackers that swing your way, the larger the payoff. Legacy and Vintage have access to it but will never touch it; those formats kill faster than any political combat math can accumulate. Oathbreaker, where games are shorter and board states smaller, dulls its ceiling considerably. The honest verdict is that Divine Retribution is a Commander-only card in practice, and even there it demands the right archetype.

Price Context
Current price
$0.61 bulk tier
At $0.61, Divine Retribution sits firmly in bulk territory — cheap to pick up, easy to cut without regret. It won't appreciate meaningfully unless a marquee commander pushes the 'being attacked' archetype into the mainstream.
