Disrupting Shoal

In Commander, Disrupting Shoal fills a specific and valuable niche: free interaction on turns where your mana is fully committed to your own gameplan. The cost — exiling a blue card of matching mana value — is real, since Commander hands don't always have the right pitch target at the right moment, but in blue-heavy decks it comes up reliably enough to justify the slot. In Legacy, it sees fringe play in pitch-spell shells where free countermagic is at a premium, though Force of Will and Daze generally outcompete it. Modern is legal but barely relevant; the format's speed and the prevalence of non-blue threats make the conditional coverage awkward. Vintage gives it the richest pitch pool imaginable but also the stiffest competition from Mana Drain and Force of Will, so Disrupting Shoal stays on the fringes there too.
