Disciple of the Old Ways card art
Disciple of the Old Ways gives your creatures first strike on demand — activated at instant speed, relevant in combat math, and free to trigger whenever you have mana open. The cost is that it does exactly one thing, so it only earns a slot when that one thing is load-bearing.

Disciple of the Old Ways is a bulk common in every competitive format, and that's the correct assessment — Modern, Pioneer, and Legacy all have better two-drops that do more. Pauper is where it comes closest to relevance, where first strike on a 2/2 body can actually matter in creature mirrors, but it still competes against commons with built-in value. In Commander, the Disciple shows up almost exclusively in Gruul stompy builds that need redundant first strike enablers to protect large ground creatures or push damage through blockers, and even there it's a fringe inclusion.

Price Context

Current price

$0.10 bulk tier

At $0.10, Disciple of the Old Ways is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and shipping, not the card. That price isn't going anywhere; single-function common creatures with no tournament pedigree don't appreciate.
