Diregraf Ghoul enters tapped, which costs you exactly one combat step on turn one — after that, it's a 2/2 for one mana with no strings attached. Efficient floor for any black aggro or zombie shell, but the enters-tapped clause means it earns its slot on raw stats alone, not tempo.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |

In Commander, Diregraf Ghoul is a role-player in dedicated Zombie tribal builds — Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver and The Scarab God want bodies on the board, and a one-mana 2/2 fills that role cheaply enough to justify the slot. Competitive Commander has no interest in it; the format moves too fast for a vanilla beater with no enters-the-battlefield effect. In aggressive black formats like Modern and Pioneer, Diregraf Ghoul competes directly with stronger one-drops that either have keywords or generate immediate value, and it usually loses that competition. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters. Standard is where it sees the most play when it's legal in the format, purely because the card pool is shallow enough that raw stats matter more.

Price Context
Current price
$1.46 cheap tier
At $1.46, Diregraf Ghoul sits at the low end of the cheap tier — fair for a one-mana 2/2 with no special text. It won't appreciate; it's a bulk rare in a game full of better one-drops.
