Dire-Strain Rampage card art
Dire-Strain Rampage destroys a nonland permanent or two lands and replaces itself — all for three mana at instant speed. In Tovolar, Dire Overlord decks especially, the Werewolf rider that transforms a Human into a 2/2 Wolf token is a live bonus, making this one of the most efficient modal spells the archetype can run.

Tovolar, Dire Overlord wants both a clock and incidental Wolf generation, and Dire-Strain Rampage delivers both — destroying a threat or blowing up two lands while producing a Wolf token that feeds Tovolar's card draw trigger.

Dire-Strain Rampage is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its real home is Commander. In 60-card formats, three mana for a sorcery-speed-effect-at-instant-speed is acceptable but rarely exceptional — dedicated removal and land destruction exist at lower costs without the modal overhead. In Commander, the flexibility is the point: one card answers an Atraxa, a Sol Ring, or two of an opponent's ramp lands depending on what the table presents, and the Wolf token rider occasionally matters in tribal builds. Outside of Werewolf/Wolf Commander lists, this is a clean role-player rather than a format staple.

Price Context

Current price

$0.33 bulk tier

At $0.33, Dire-Strain Rampage sits squarely in bulk territory — easy to pick up without thinking about the budget. Bulk modal instants with tribal upside rarely spike unless the archetype breaks out, so expect this price to stay flat.
