Dig Through Time lets you look at seven cards and keep the two best — for as little as two blue mana once your graveyard is loaded. That delve cost is the whole story: in a format where 40-card games generate constant spell traffic, this card routinely costs UU by the midgame, making it one of the most efficient draw spells in Commander.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | banned |
| modern | banned |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | restricted |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Dig Through Time carries three restrictions worth naming: it's banned in Legacy, banned in Modern, and restricted to a single copy in Vintage. The through-line is speed — in those formats, fetches and cantrips fill the graveyard so fast that Dig Through Time becomes a two-mana tutor-plus on turn two or three, which breaks those formats' tempo assumptions. Commander gives it a pass for two reasons: the singleton rule means you see it at most once, and the slower, multiplayer pace means graveyard setup takes longer and the raw card advantage doesn't translate into the same deterministic early pressure.

Rootha, Mastering the Moment
Rootha, Mastering the Moment copies instants and sorceries for free, so copying Dig Through Time means looking at fourteen cards and keeping four — at effectively no extra cost once delve kicks in.

Quandrix, the Proof
Quandrix, the Proof rewards casting high-MV spells with triggered value, and Dig Through Time's nominal cost of eight makes it a reliable trigger even when you're paying two mana after delve.

Sakashima of a Thousand Faces // Vial Smasher the Fierce
Vial Smasher the Fierce deals damage equal to a spell's mana value when it's cast, and Dig Through Time's printed cost of eight makes it a punishing Vial Smasher trigger even when delve reduces the actual payment to almost nothing.

Hidetsugu and Kairi
Hidetsugu and Kairi triggers on entering the battlefield by casting the top card of the library for free if it's a noncreature spell, and Dig Through Time's high mana value makes it one of the most impactful free casts off that trigger.

Elminster
Elminster generates scry triggers constantly, keeping the top of the library managed — Dig Through Time turns that library knowledge into a guaranteed two-card selection from the top seven, making the two engines clean partners.
