Diary of Dreams card art
Diary of Dreams lets you discard a card to untap a creature — raw card disadvantage on the surface, but in the right shell it's a repeatable untap engine that generates more value than it costs. Black Waltz No. 3 and Mind Over Matter decks that want to loop activated abilities multiple times per turn treat it as a core piece, not a cute option.

Black Waltz No. 3 wants to activate the same creature repeatedly in a single turn, and Diary of Dreams is one of the cheapest ways to keep untapping that creature — pair them and you're converting extra cards in hand directly into additional activations.

Diary of Dreams is legal across every major Constructed format but sees essentially no play outside Commander, where the singleton rule and longer game length give repeatable untap effects room to compound. In Commander, it slots into any deck that runs high-loyalty planeswalkers or creatures with powerful tap abilities — the discard cost shrinks to nothing once you have a hand-refill engine running alongside it. Legacy and Vintage have access to faster, more redundant untap pieces, so Diary of Dreams doesn't compete there. Modern and Pioneer are too tempo-driven for a card that costs both mana and cards before it does anything. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander 60-card variant where it could see genuine use, specifically in signature-spell shells built around a planeswalker that rewards repeated untapping.

Price Context

Current price

$0.31 bulk tier

At $0.31, Diary of Dreams sits firmly in bulk territory — you're paying almost nothing for a card that does real work in the right Commander build. Bulk rares at this price point rarely hold or climb unless a new commander pushes them into demand, so pick it up for the deck you need it for and don't treat it as a long-term hold.
