Devouring Hellion enters as a variable-sized threat — sacrifice any number of creatures you control and it grows by that much — making it an immediate board presence that scales with your available fodder. The cost is real: those sacrificed creatures are gone, so it only earns its slot in decks that already want creatures in the graveyard or treat tokens as disposable fuel.

Commander is where Devouring Hellion actually has a home, specifically in aristocrats and token-swarm shells that generate expendable creatures faster than they can spend them. Sacrifice a board of Goblin tokens before a wrath lands and you at minimum preserve a single large threat — that's a real play pattern. In competitive formats like Modern, Legacy, and Vintage, it's too slow and too dependent on board state to compete with dedicated sacrifice payoffs that don't require you to dump your entire field into one creature. Pioneer players have access to it but will find more reliable threats at the same mana cost. The card is legal across most constructed formats but belongs in exactly one context.

$0.13 bulk tier
At $0.13, Devouring Hellion is deep bulk — the kind of card you pick up as a playset without blinking. Bulk rares with narrow applications rarely climb on their own, so don't expect movement unless a future Commander precon makes sacrifice-into-one-big-body a marquee strategy.
