Demonfire

Sorcery

Demonfire deals X damage to any target. If a creature dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead.
Hellbent — If you have no cards in hand, this spell can't be countered and the damage can't be prevented.

Demonfire card art
Demonfire ends games — dump your mana into it and it's uncounterable if you have no cards in hand, which makes it a clean finisher for storm and big-mana builds that empty their grip naturally. The cost is that it does nothing before that terminal moment, so every copy in your deck is a dead draw until you're ready to kill.

oathbreaker

In Commander, Demonfire slots into storm and mana-doubler shells that can generate obscene amounts of mana in a single turn — the hellbent uncounterability clause matters most here, where interaction is dense and a telegraphed X-spell is otherwise easy to answer. In Modern and Legacy, it competes with Grapeshot and Tendrils of Agony for the storm kill slot and mostly loses that fight, since those cards win through multiple opponents or through blockers in ways Demonfire doesn't. Vintage gives it the same competitive landscape with even fewer reasons to pick it over established finishers. Demonfire is legal in Oathbreaker as well, where its ceiling is the same as Commander — high in the right shell, irrelevant outside it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.21 bulk tier

At $0.21, Demonfire is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. It's a safe pickup that won't appreciate, but for a build that actually wants it, the financial ask is essentially nothing.
