In Commander, Defiant Stand earns its slot in decks that live or die by a single creature — it blocks a lethal attacker, pumps a blocking commander to survive, and replaces itself, all for two mana. Outside Commander, the card is legal in Legacy and Vintage but has never seen meaningful play there; the effect is too narrow for formats that end games before defensive tricks matter. Oathbreaker is the one other context where protecting a planeswalker with a blocker boost occasionally lines up, but even there Defiant Stand is a fringe consideration.
