Defend the Hearth is a functional one-mana Fog in every format it's legal in, which covers nearly everything from Pauper to Vintage. In Commander it earns a niche in pillow-fort decks, turbo-fog strategies, and any green commander that needs to survive one more turn to land a combo or ultimate a planeswalker. Pauper is its most competitive home, where one-mana fogs have occasionally shown up in turbo-fog shells looking to stall until a Temporal Fissure or Ghostly Flicker loop closes the game. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's outclassed by Fog itself or more flexible fog variants, so Defend the Hearth sees almost no play there.
