Deepwood Elder lands and immediately shrinks every opposing creature's power by the number of Forests you control — in a dedicated mono-green or Forests-matter build, that's a board-wide debuff that can neutralize entire combat steps. The six-mana cost is real, but the effect is continuous and requires no activation, making it a threat that demands an answer.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Deepwood Elder is worth serious consideration — the singleton format's longer games and Forest-heavy green ramp shells give the static penalty enough time to matter. In Legacy and Vintage, a six-mana do-nothing-until-your-next-turn enchantment creature doesn't clear the bar when faster threats and interaction dominate. Deepwood Elder is locked out of Modern, Pioneer, Standard, and Pauper entirely. Oathbreaker is legal but the smaller life totals and faster pace make the six-mana investment hard to justify unless your signature spell ramps aggressively into it.

Price Context
Current price
$0.40 bulk tier
At $0.40, Deepwood Elder is firmly bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a niche but functional effect. Bulk rares with narrow applications like this rarely spike unless a new commander pushes the archetype into the spotlight, so don't expect the price to move.
