Deathgazer forces any creature that blocks or is blocked by it to die at end of combat, bypassing regeneration and "indestructible" text on paper but not in practice — it's a conditional removal staple on a 1/1 body for four mana. The cost is simply too high: four mana for a 1/1 that needs to survive combat to do anything is unplayable in nearly every context.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Deathgazer is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but legality is not the same as playability. In Commander, the format where slow, value-oriented creatures get the most rope, a four-mana 1/1 with a conditional triggered ability still can't clear that bar — the effect requires combat, requires surviving it, and trades up only if your opponent walks into the exchange. Legacy and Vintage have zero interest in this effect at any cost. Modern has long since moved past four-mana creatures that don't immediately impact the board. Deathgazer is outclassed in every format it's legal in.

Current price
$0.15 bulk tier
At $0.15, Deathgazer is deep bulk — the price reflects the demand, which is essentially none. It won't hold or lose meaningful value from here; bulk bottoms out and stays there.
