Deathgaze Cockatrice puts flying and deathtouch on a 2/2 body for four mana — a combination that forces opponents to either chump or trade their best attacker. The problem is that four mana for a 2/2 with no enters-the-battlefield effect is simply below rate in any format where better deathtouch flyers exist.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|

| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Deathgaze Cockatrice is outclassed by nearly every deathtouch flyer at the same cost — Baleful Strix and Gifted Aetherborn do more for less. Pauper is the one format where the card's floor matters: flying deathtouch is a real deterrent in a format with fewer efficient answers, and a four-mana 2/2 is at least playable in slower black-green builds. In Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage the card has no competitive footing — the competition at four mana is too steep for a vanilla-statted creature.

Price Context
Current price
$0.07 bulk tier
At $0.07, Deathgaze Cockatrice is pure bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not power. That price is stable by definition: there's no demand to drive it lower, and no reason for it to rise.
