Deathbringer Thoctar card art
Deathbringer Thoctar turns every creature death into a sniper shot — slap a Basilisk Collar on it and the whole board folds to deathtouch pings. The cost is six mana for a 5/4 with no immediate board impact, so it needs a sacrifice engine or removal-heavy shell to justify itself.

Thraximundar

Thraximundar

20.1% of decks · synergy 0.20

Thraximundar forces sacrifice on every attack, and each of those deaths loads a counter onto Deathbringer Thoctar — the two cards form a self-fueling removal engine that accelerates with every swing.

Kelsien, the Plague

Kelsien, the Plague

15.3% of decks · synergy 0.15

Kelsien, the Plague already wants creatures dying to accumulate experience counters, and Deathbringer Thoctar converts that same stream of deaths into targeted pings that keep feeding Kelsien's growth.

03
Prossh, Skyraider of Kher

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher

12.6% of decks · synergy 0.12

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher drops six Kobolds on entry, and cashing them in for damage through Deathbringer Thoctar gives you six free pings before you've spent a single extra mana.

Commander is where Deathbringer Thoctar actually lives — multiplayer tables generate enough creature deaths to load it fast, and the pinpoint damage hits any player or planeswalker, which matters when you need to answer a threat across the table. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant; six mana for a value engine that requires setup is nowhere near the power level those formats demand. Modern is the same story: too slow, too dependent on a board state that faster decks simply ignore. Stick to Commander.

Price Context

Current price

$0.69 bulk tier

At $0.69, Deathbringer Thoctar is firmly bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card with real combo upside in the right shell. Bulk rares with active combo applications tend to stay in this range, so there's no urgency to buy a dozen, but picking up a copy for your sacrifice deck costs less than a sleeve.
