Death Wind kills one creature — the size of which depends entirely on how much mana you can throw at it. It's flexible removal that scales into the late game, but sorcery speed and single-target scope keep it off most competitive lists.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Death Wind occupies the low end of viable black removal — it can answer almost any creature if you have the mana, but sorcery speed means you can't use it as a combat trick or respond to an activation, which is where most of the best spot removal earns its keep. In Pauper it competes in a format where efficient black removal like Chainer's Edict and Doom Blade sets a high bar, and Death Wind rarely clears it. Legacy, Modern, and Vintage have far better options at every point on the curve, so it doesn't see play there. Oathbreaker can reward it in dedicated black-mana-sink builds, but even then there are stronger choices.

Price Context
Current price
$0.13 bulk tier
At $0.13, Death Wind is bulk by any measure — you're paying almost nothing for a flexible but slow removal spell. That price is stable simply because demand is low, not because the card is a hidden gem.
