Death Speakers is a 1/2 white human cleric with protection from black — niche enough that it rarely earns a slot outside of dedicated protection-from-black synergy builds. The body is undersized and the ability too narrow for most Commander tables, where black removal is only one of many threats you'll face.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Death Speakers is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Pauper it's the most plausible home — cheap white creatures with evasion-adjacent abilities occasionally matter — but protection from black is too conditional when the field includes red, green, and artifact-based removal. In Commander, Death Speakers trades too much card equity for a protection clause that stops maybe one or two decks at a given table. Legacy and Vintage have far more efficient one-drops, and neither format has any reason to slot this over a creature that actually closes games.
