Deadly Derision exiles any nonland permanent and replaces itself with a Treasure — two of the most valuable things a removal spell can do, stapled together for four mana. The cost is real at 2BB, but the exile clause plus card parity makes it a clean inclusion over destroy-only options that leave the permanent in the graveyard.

Commander is where Deadly Derision earns its slot — four mana is acceptable in a 40-life format where you're rarely racing, exile matters against recursion-heavy decks, and the Treasure smooths your curve into a five-drop the same turn. In Pauper it's a legitimate role-player, competing with Doomblade and Cast Down in black removal suites where card parity at common is genuinely scarce. Elsewhere — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy — Deadly Derision is too slow; Fatal Push and Infernal Grasp handle threats faster and cheaper in formats where tempo is the whole game.
