Dauntless Veteran puts a free +1/+1 counter on every creature you control the moment it dies — no mana, no activation, just an immediate board pump as a death trigger. At two mana for a 2/2, the body is filler, but the trigger is real payoff in any deck that wants creatures to grow.

Commander is where Dauntless Veteran actually earns a slot — token strategies and aristocrats shells both want the free counter distribution when a creature dies, and with 40 life and longer games, the incremental value compounds. In 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, it's too slow and too conditional; a 2/2 for two that only pays off when something dies doesn't compete with the raw efficiency available. Legacy and Vintage have no interest. Standard is theoretically the most viable 60-card home if a death-matters or go-wide deck wants a low-cost payoff, but the competition is stiff even there.

Price Context
Current price
$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Dauntless Veteran is pure bulk — the kind of card you pick up as an afterthought when ordering singles. That price is stable; there's no pressure driving it up, and it sees just enough Commander play to keep it from being a dime-box throwaway forever.
