Darkblade Agent draws a card whenever it deals combat damage to a player — but only if you control a Spy, which is a tribe with almost no competitive support. The payoff is real; the tribal dependency makes it niche enough that it belongs in exactly one kind of deck.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Darkblade Agent is a Commander card first and almost exclusively. The Spy subtype has no meaningful presence in Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, or Pauper, so the card-draw trigger sits dormant in those formats and a vanilla 2/3 for three mana isn't worth a slot anywhere competitive. In Commander, the niche opens up under Lazav, Dimir Mastermind or similar Dimir shapeshifter and Spy-matters shells where copying a Spy or running the handful of existing ones makes the trigger live. Pauper is the one fringe exception — the card is legal and the rate isn't embarrassing at common, but the tribal condition is still a dead weight without dedicated support.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Darkblade Agent is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a box, not a store. That price is stable for the foreseeable future; there is no crossover appeal or reprint pressure that would move it in either direction.
