D'Avenant Trapper taps down a creature whenever you cast a historic spell — instants, sorceries, artifacts, and Sagas all trigger it, making it a surprisingly consistent lock piece in the right shell. The three-mana 1/3 body is unremarkable, but the tap effect is free and repeatable, which is the whole point.

In Commander, D'Avenant Trapper slots into Boros or Azorius historic-matters builds where you're casting enough artifacts and instants to trigger it multiple times per turn cycle — think Raff Capashen or Jhoira of the Ghitu shells where historic spells flow freely. Outside Commander, it sees essentially no competitive play: Modern, Pioneer, and Legacy have faster, more targeted ways to tap down blockers or lock opponents out, and a 1/3 for three with a conditional tap isn't close to rate. Pauper is the one format worth a second glance, where slower games and lower card quality make a repeatable tap effect more meaningful, though it still needs a critical mass of artifacts to fire consistently.

Price Context
Current price
$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, D'Avenant Trapper is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and postage, not the card itself. That price is stable because demand is narrow and supply is ample; it won't move unless a new historic-matters commander breaks through and puts the archetype on the map.
