Cyclopean Tomb

Artifact

{2}, {T}: Put a mire counter on target non-Swamp land. That land is a Swamp for as long as it has a mire counter on it. Activate only during your upkeep.
When this artifact is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, at the beginning of each of your upkeeps for the rest of the game, remove all mire counters from a land that a mire counter was put onto with this artifact but that a mire counter has not been removed from with this artifact.

Cyclopean Tomb card art
Cyclopean Tomb turns any nonswamp land into a Swamp at instant speed, giving black-matters and Swamp-counting strategies a repeatable, targeted land conversion engine. The catch is brutal: when Cyclopean Tomb leaves the battlefield, every land it touched reverts, so your window is measured in turns, not games.

Cyclopean Tomb is a Commander card through and through — its value compounds over multiple turns in long games, and the reversion clause matters far less when you can engineer the Tomb leaving on your terms. In Legacy and Vintage, the setup cost is too slow and the payoff too incremental against decks operating at much higher speed, so it sees essentially no competitive play in those formats despite being legal. Commander is where the land-type conversion becomes genuinely disruptive: stripping colored mana from opponents, fueling Swamp-matters payoffs, or enabling black's land-count synergies across a full table is worth the four-mana investment.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

There is no direct budget replacement for what Cyclopean Tomb does — repeatable, targeted nonswamp-to-Swamp conversion is a unique effect. Blanket Darkness and similar niche stax pieces cover adjacent denial territory, but if the goal is inflating your Swamp count cheaply, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth does it passively for the whole table at a similar price point, and Filth fills a utility role in reanimator builds without the activation overhead.

Price Context

Current price

$17.00 mid tier

At $17, Cyclopean Tomb sits in the mid tier — expensive enough to feel like a deliberate inclusion, not an auto-add. It's an old card with a narrow use case, so the price reflects scarcity and collector interest more than format demand; it's unlikely to spike but equally unlikely to crater.
