Cultbrand Cinder

In Commander, Cultbrand Cinder earns a slot only when the deck actively synergizes with -1/-1 counters — think Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician builds where every counter placed generates a secondary payoff. As a standalone removal piece at five mana, it's too slow and too conditional when cheaper targeted removal exists. In Pauper, the common card pool is shallow enough that an enters-the-battlefield pinger on a creature can see fringe play in black-based -1/-1 counter shells, though five mana remains a real commitment in that format's tempo-sensitive environment. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters — the competition at that mana cost is simply not survivable.
