Culling Sun wipes every creature with converted mana cost 3 or less for six mana — a lopsided sweeper that can leave your big threats standing while clearing out token swarms, mana dorks, and utility creatures. Six mana is steep, but the asymmetry is real enough to earn a slot in the right shell.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Culling Sun actually earns a roster spot — the format's reliance on cheap interaction, mana creatures, and token generators means the board you clear is often more populated than it looks, and your own five-drops walk away clean. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage it's unplayable; those formats have cheaper, unconditional sweepers that don't ask you to build around the curve threshold. Oathbreaker shares enough of Commander's creature-size spread to make Culling Sun situationally interesting, but the 20-life starting total compresses games enough that a six-mana sorcery often arrives too late.
