Crookclaw Elder turns every instant or sorcery you cast into a free flying body, stacking a board state while you run your spell suite. The payoff is real, but a five-mana 2/2 with no immediate ETB guarantee means it earns its slot only in decks that cast a high volume of spells each turn.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Crookclaw Elder is worth serious consideration — a five-mana enchantment needs a long game and a commander that justifies the spell density, and EDH provides both. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but nowhere near playable; those formats end before Crookclaw Elder does anything, and every token shell there has faster, more resilient options. Oathbreaker is legal but similarly hostile to a five-mana do-nothing-on-entry enchantment.

Price Context
Current price
$0.29 bulk tier
At $0.29, Crookclaw Elder is pure bulk — no financial barrier to testing it. Bulk token-makers rarely spike unless they land in a precon or get paired with a breakout commander, so expect this price to stay flat.
