Crippling Fear

Commander is where Crippling Fear belongs — tribal synergy is endemic to the format, and a four-mana one-sided wipe that costs nothing beyond deck-building alignment is exactly the kind of efficient payoff tribal strategies need. In competitive Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer, Crippling Fear is too slow and too conditional for non-tribal lists, and tribal decks in those formats rarely want a sorcery-speed sweeper that names a specific type. Vintage has the raw power to make anything work, but Crippling Fear doesn't clear artifacts or lands, so it rarely makes the cut. For Commander specifically, it rewards tight tribal construction and punishes the board states opponents have spent several turns building.
