Crested Sunmare card art
Crested Sunmare puts a 5/5 indestructible Horse token into play at the end of every turn your team gains life — that's a board-state problem opponents have to answer immediately or lose to attrition. Five mana is the honest cost of a card that generates indestructible bodies on a loop, and Thurid, Mare of Destiny turns that loop into something closer to a game-ending engine.

Thurid, Mare of Destiny

Thurid, Mare of Destiny

89.8% of decks · synergy 0.87

Thurid, Mare of Destiny is the natural home — her ability to grant lifelink to Horses means Crested Sunmare's own tokens can trigger the next end-step token, creating a self-sustaining loop without needing outside life-gain support.

03
Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

33.8% of decks · synergy 0.32

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic drips life gain at the start of every upkeep from the command zone, which is exactly the steady, repeatable trigger Crested Sunmare needs to produce a Horse token on each opponent's end step as well as your own.

04
Shanna, Purifying Blade

Shanna, Purifying Blade

26.2% of decks · synergy 0.26

Shanna, Purifying Blade converts life gain into card draw, so Crested Sunmare's token engine doubles as a draw engine — every 5/5 that enters triggers Shanna and refills your hand.

05
Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn

Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn

26.2% of decks · synergy 0.24

Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn distributes +1/+1 counters whenever you gain life, turning Crested Sunmare's token triggers into a counters-and-bodies combination that scales board presence in two directions simultaneously.

Commander is where Crested Sunmare lives — multiplayer games run long enough that the end-of-turn token trigger fires repeatedly, and indestructible 5/5s compound fast when opponents can't profitably block into them. In Modern and Pioneer, five mana is a steep ask for a payoff that does nothing the turn it lands and folds to any bounce or exile effect before the end step arrives. Legacy and Vintage are too fast for a fair five-drop that needs combat steps to close games. Crested Sunmare sees essentially zero competitive play outside Commander, but inside that format it is a legitimate finisher in any deck built around reliable life gain.
