Craterize destroys a land and leaves a 3/3 Wurm token in its place — for your opponent. Four mana at sorcery speed to give your enemy a free body is a bad trade in any context. There are cleaner land destruction spells at every price point; skip this one.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Craterize is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but legality and playability are different things. In Commander, land destruction is already a political liability, and handing the targeted player a 3/3 Wurm makes it nearly indefensible — you've slowed one person's mana while giving the table a reason to shoot back at you. In Pauper, where land destruction shells do occasionally see play, the Wurm clause is disqualifying when Stone Rain and Thermokarst exist at the same cost without the drawback. Craterize has no competitive home in any format.
