Cosmic Horror lands as a 7/7 trample for seven mana — the problem is the upkeep: pay three black mana every turn or it destroys itself. That recurring tax makes it a liability in nearly any shell that can't reliably generate triple black every upkeep, and there are cleaner seven-mana threats in every format it's legal in.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Cosmic Horror is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive play in Legacy and Vintage won't touch a seven-mana creature with a self-destruct clause when faster, cheaper threats exist. Commander is the only realistic home, and even there Cosmic Horror fights uphill — mono-black or heavy-black decks can satisfy the upkeep cost consistently, but the payoff, a 7/7 trampler with no enter-the-battlefield effect, doesn't justify the slot when commanders like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse or Toxrill, the Corrosive offer far more text for comparable investment. It's a flavor piece more than a competitive consideration.

Price Context
Current price
$0.41 bulk tier
At $0.41, Cosmic Horror is deep bulk — cheap enough to sleeve up for a nostalgia build without a second thought. Demand is low and unlikely to move the price in either direction, so there's no urgency to buy in or trade out.
