Corrupt card art
Corrupt drains an opponent for the number of Swamps you control and gains you that much life — at seven mana in mono-black, that's typically a five-to-seven point life swing that closes races and fuels lifegain payoffs in the same motion. Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose turns every point of that life gain into additional damage, which makes Corrupt a lethal finisher rather than just a drain spell.

Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose runs Corrupt because the life gain half triggers Vito's damage doubling effect — a single Corrupt resolving with five or six Swamps in play can translate into enough damage output to eliminate a player outright without needing any other setup.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

In Commander, Corrupt is a role-player in dedicated mono-black lifegain or drain builds — the Swamp count scales naturally as games go long, and a seven-mana instant that gains six or seven life while dealing the same damage is a real return on investment. Outside Commander, the calculus gets harsher: Pauper is the only competitive format where Corrupt sees meaningful play, specifically in mono-black control shells that can reliably hit the Swamp count needed to make the drain threatening. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's legal but outclassed — faster formats don't give you the turns to build a Swamp base, and seven mana buys you game-ending threats instead. Vintage has the same problem at a steeper level.

$0.09 bulk tier

At $0.09, Corrupt is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a commons box or throw into a trade binder without thinking twice. Bulk rare pricing is stable by definition; there's no reason to expect movement in either direction.
