Corpse Appraiser enters, exiles a card from any graveyard, then lets you look at the top three cards of any library and put one into your hand — three lines of text on a three-mana 3/3. The cost is the creature type: Vampire Wizard fits neatly into tribal shells, but outside of those, a 3/3 with no evasion and a one-time ETB rarely makes the cut in competitive lists. In Evelyn, the Covetous decks specifically, Corpse Appraiser is close to mandatory.

Evelyn, the Covetous triggers off every Vampire you cast from any zone, and Corpse Appraiser's ETB stacks with that — you're getting graveyard hate, card selection, and an Evelyn trigger stapled together for three mana, which is exactly the rate Evelyn lists want.

Corpse Appraiser is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it only meaningfully shows up in Commander. In Modern and Pioneer the bar for a three-mana 3/3 with a one-shot ETB is simply too high — there are cheaper, more repeatable options for both graveyard interaction and card selection. Legacy and Vintage don't want it at all. Commander is where Corpse Appraiser earns its slot: multiplayer slows the format down enough that the ETB value compounds, and Vampire tribal has enough density to make the creature type matter beyond just the enters-the-battlefield effect.
