In Commander, Coral Trickster earns its slot almost exclusively in ETB-abuse shells — outside of Missy and similar flicker commanders, a 2/1 that taps one permanent is too low-impact for a 100-card singleton format. Pauper is where it has the broadest competitive footing, since common-only Merfolk and tempo strategies can actually leverage the body alongside the effect. In Legacy and Vintage it's strictly outclassed — those formats don't have time for a two-mana creature that doesn't immediately threaten the game. Modern has better options at every point on the curve, so Coral Trickster doesn't see play there either.
