Consuming Corruption card art
Consuming Corruption destroys a target creature and gains you life equal to its toughness — meaningful lifegain stapled to unconditional removal at four mana. It's the card Valgavoth, Terror Eater decks want most, since that lifegain directly fuels drawing into your next threat.

Valgavoth, Terror Eater

Valgavoth, Terror Eater

52.3% of decks · synergy 0.37

Valgavoth, Terror Eater cares about opponents losing life and you gaining it, so Consuming Corruption does double work — removing a blocker while padding your life total to trigger Valgavoth's draw ability.

02
Toshiro Umezawa

Toshiro Umezawa

51.9% of decks · synergy 0.36

Toshiro Umezawa lets you flashback instant-speed kill spells when creatures die, and Consuming Corruption gives that engine a removal spell that also sustains your life total for grindy games.

04
Gisa, the Hellraiser

Gisa, the Hellraiser

37.7% of decks · synergy 0.22

Gisa, the Hellraiser wants creatures dying and the board clear for zombie swings, making Consuming Corruption a natural fit that also keeps Gisa's pilot alive through the midgame.

05
Gonti, Night Minister

Gonti, Night Minister

Gonti, Night Minister rewards life loss and gain in the same breath, and Consuming Corruption's built-in lifegain synergizes cleanly with any payoff Gonti generates from both sides of that equation.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where Consuming Corruption belongs — four-mana instant-speed removal that gains life is a solid rate in a format where toughness-5 creatures are common and lifegain matters for numerous commanders. In Legacy and Vintage it's outclassed by cheaper unconditional removal, and the lifegain clause doesn't compensate for the tempo loss at those speeds. Modern is legal but similarly hostile; the four-mana slot is brutally contested and Consuming Corruption won't make the cut there. Oathbreaker is viable for the same reason Commander is — the lifegain payoff scales with the right signature spell or planeswalker, and the power level ceiling is lower than eternal formats.

Price Context

Current price

$0.36 bulk tier

At $0.36, Consuming Corruption is bulk — pick up as many copies as you need without a second thought. Bulk rares with narrow Commander demand tend to stay in this range, so don't expect the price to move unless a new lifegain-matters commander pushes it.
