In Commander, Combust earns its slot whenever a table regularly runs blue counterspell-heavy or white protection-heavy commanders — it punches through Teferi, Time Raveler, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, and anything with Protection from Red that would otherwise laugh off your removal. The uncounterable clause is genuinely rare on spot removal and matters most in games where a blue player is sitting on open mana. In Legacy and Vintage, Combust has seen sideboard play as a clean answer to Uro, True-Name Nemesis, and other problematic blue or white creatures that dodge conventional red burn. Modern treated it as a sideboard option against Death and Taxes and similar white creature strategies, though the format's threat density has outpaced its narrow targeting. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander read — useful when your meta calls for it, invisible otherwise.
