Coiling Stalker card art
Coiling Stalker puts a free counter on a creature every time it deals combat damage while unblocked — stack that with ninjutsu and the counters compound fast. Thousand-Faced Shadow does the same trick for half the mana, which is the honest reason Coiling Stalker sits at the back of the queue in most ninja builds.

Format Analysis

In Commander, Coiling Stalker earns a slot almost exclusively in ninja tribal — outside that archetype, a three-mana 1/1 that needs to connect to do anything is too slow for the format's pace. In Pauper, where commons rule and aggro is tight, the card is legal but undersized against the efficient threats and interaction the format demands. Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer all have access to it, but a three-mana creature with no immediate board impact doesn't compete in those formats' threat density. Coiling Stalker is a Commander card through and through, and even there, it's a role-player rather than a staple.

Price Context

Current price

$0.17 bulk tier

At $0.17, Coiling Stalker is deep bulk — you're paying nearly nothing to fill a ninjutsu synergy slot. Bulk rares and uncommons at this price point don't tend to move unless a pushed commander drives sudden demand, and nothing on the horizon suggests that for Coiling Stalker.
