Coal Stoker enters and refunds three mana on the spot — the cost is a four-mana creature with a 3/3 body that does nothing else. In any deck that can reliably cast it for free or via evoke, like Herigast, Erupting Nullkite, that "cost" evaporates and you're left with a pure mana burst.

Herigast, Erupting Nullkite
Herigast, Erupting Nullkite cheats creatures into play for free, which means Coal Stoker enters, triggers, and deposits three mana into your pool with zero mana invested — a clean acceleration engine that lets you chain spells on the same turn Herigast lands.

Coal Stoker is a Commander card, full stop. The three-mana refund on an evoke or cheat-into-play shell is genuinely powerful, but a four-mana 3/3 with no other text is unplayable in Legacy, Vintage, or Modern where the bar for creatures is much higher. Pauper is the one non-Commander format where Coal Stoker has occasionally appeared, but the lack of efficient free-cast enablers at common keeps it fringe there too. Stick to Commander, and specifically to decks that can bypass the mana cost entirely.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Coal Stoker is deep bulk — grab a playset for the price of a gumball. That price is stable and going nowhere; it's a single-printing common with narrow appeal, so don't expect it to spike, but also don't hesitate to pick up copies for any deck that wants it.
