Cloudkill kills every creature with toughness 1 or 2 outright and shrinks everything else — for five mana, that's a sweeper and a soft board wipe rolled into one. It's a strong pick in any black deck that needs cheap answers to tokens and small utility creatures.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Cloudkill earns its slot — token strategies, mana dorks, and small utility creatures are everywhere, and Cloudkill handles them all at instant speed if you have the mana up. In Legacy and Vintage, the format's fastest threats are large enough that Cloudkill barely registers; it's theoretically legal but practically irrelevant against Delver, True-Name Nemesis, and similar staples. Cloudkill is banned from Modern, Pioneer, Standard, and Pauper entirely. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's creature density closely enough that the same logic applies — it's a real card there if black walkers are your thing.

Price Context
Current price
$0.11 bulk tier
At $0.11, Cloudkill is deep bulk — you're picking this out of a dollar box or grabbing a playset for under a quarter. Bulk rares rarely climb without a reprint ban or sudden format adoption, and nothing on the horizon suggests Cloudkill breaks that pattern.
