Civic Saber enters as a zero-equip-cost weapon that scales its power bonus off the equipped creature's color count — one color gets +1/+0, five colors gets +5/+0, all for a single generic mana to cast. It's a narrow card: mediocre in mono-color decks, genuinely strong only when you're running multicolor or five-color commanders.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Civic Saber is a Commander card first and almost exclusively. The format rewards multicolor commanders — Kenrith, the Returned King or Jodah, the Unifier types pick up a free +5/+0 the moment the Saber lands, and the zero equip cost means no mana tax to move it around. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's legal but invisible — constructed formats don't have room for a do-nothing artifact that requires a five-color creature to justify itself. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's dynamics on a smaller scale, so the same multicolor logic applies there.

Price Context
Current price
$0.18 bulk tier
At $0.18, Civic Saber is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a common box rather than buy. That price is stable by nature; bulk equipment with narrow application doesn't spike, and there's no meaningful reprint risk to track.
