Cinder Elemental trades its life for a scalable X-damage shot at any target — the ceiling is real, but tapping out a five-mana 2/2 to maybe threaten a planeswalker is a steep ask. It's a fringe pick that only earns its slot in dedicated mana-doubling or untap-value shells.

Cinder Elemental is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive play in any of those formats has no room for a five-mana 2/2 with a sorcery-speed sink. Commander is the only realistic home, and even there it's a narrow fit — you want Krark-Clan Ironworks or Rosheen Meanderer style decks that already generate absurd mana and want another outlet.
