Chromium is a 7/7 flying, trampling Elder Dragon with protection from instants — a genuinely difficult threat to interact with at combat — but it costs eight mana and requires blue, black, and white pips in an era where four-mana threats routinely close games. The protection from instants is real upside, but eight mana for a creature that doesn't immediately end the game is a hard sell in any powered environment.

In Commander, Chromium sees niche play as a castable threat in Esper goodstuff shells — the protection from instants means it dodges most common interaction, which matters at a table where everyone has open mana. Legacy and Vintage are the only other formats where Chromium is legal, and neither has any use for an eight-mana vanilla threat when those formats are defined by turn-one and turn-two kill conditions. Oathbreaker is legal but similarly uninterested. Chromium's real Commander home is as the commander itself in a dedicated Elder Dragon or Esper voltron build, where the built-in evasion and protection justify the top-end cost.
