Chastise kills an attacking creature and gains you life equal to its power — at instant speed, for four mana, with no targeting restrictions beyond "attacking." It's bulk rare territory for a reason: Jumbo Cactuar aside, four mana is too steep for a single-target removal spell that only works mid-combat.

Chastise is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive play in any of those formats has no interest in it. In Commander, the life gain is incidentally appealing in lifegain-matters builds, but four mana at instant speed for one creature removed is a poor rate when Swords to Plowshares exists at one mana. Legacy and Vintage have even less patience for this cost. Chastise occupies a narrow lane: casual Commander tables where the life swing matters and you need another white removal spell to fill the list.
