Cease // Desist

In Commander, Cease // Desist earns its slot as a catch-all answer: Cease handles the resolved threat you couldn't counter, while Desist can gut an opponent's hand of a specific type before they unload on you. Competitive Commander lists will generally prefer cheaper or more efficient single-function interaction, but mid-power tables where flexibility matters more than raw speed will find both halves relevant. In 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, it faces stiff competition — three mana for a sorcery-speed exile is too slow when dedicated removal exists at one or two, and the discard half competes against established hand disruption at lower cost. Legacy and Vintage are similarly unkind for the same reason. Standard is where Cease // Desist has the most room to breathe if the format lacks cheap exile-based removal, though its ceiling is still "role-player" rather than "staple."
