The cost is that the ping is modest enough to matter only in critical combos, not as a standalone damage engine.

In Commander, Cautery Sliver earns its slot in any Sliver tribal build that wants a free sacrifice outlet — it enables infinite-loop kills when you have infinite Slivers and a damage outlet is the missing piece, and it cleanly sidesteps Cursed Totem and similar stax by activating via sacrifice rather than a tap ability. Outside Commander, it sees essentially no Modern or Legacy play; tribal Slivers in those formats prioritize aggressive curve and lord effects over a 1-damage ping, and the combo potential is harder to assemble in 60-card games. Legacy Slivers are a fringe archetype at best, so Cautery Sliver rarely makes the cut there either.
