Carrion Imp enters, you gain life equal to the number of creature cards in target player's graveyard — a potentially large life swing stapled to a 2/3 flier for five mana. The cost is the problem: five mana for a one-time trigger on an unprotected body is a lot to ask in any competitive context.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Carrion Imp finds its most forgiving home — four opponents means four graveyards filling up, and in a long game the trigger can easily pay back 10 or more life. Pauper is its most competitive format, where five-mana commons can hold a board position and life totals matter in slower midrange mirrors. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer the card is technically legal but functionally irrelevant — the rate is too slow and the body too fragile for any of those formats' threats. Carrion Imp is a casual Commander card first and a Pauper curiosity second; everywhere else it's a bulk rare in the wrong century.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Carrion Imp is deep bulk — the floor of Magic singles pricing. It holds no financial value and is unlikely to move without an unexpected reprint in a high-profile product, so buy it for the deck slot, not the price tag.
