Carrion converts a single creature's power into that many 0/1 Insect tokens — the bigger the creature you sacrifice, the more bodies you get, and token-doubling effects can make this absurd. The two black mana cost is trivial; the real ask is having a high-power creature to feed it, which makes Carrion a build-around rather than a generic value card.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Carrion actually lives — sacrifice synergies, token doublers like Doubling Season, and aristocrats payoffs are all over the format, and a single Carrion on a Phyrexian Dreadnought or a buffed token can flood the board instantly. Legacy and Vintage legality is technically on the books, but neither format has any reason to run Carrion when faster, less conditional black spells exist. Outside of Commander, this card doesn't have a home worth discussing.

Price Context
Current price
$3.20 cheap tier
At $3.20, Carrion sits in cheap territory for a narrow build-around — it's not a staple price, but it's not a bulk throw-in either. The price reflects its cult status in sacrifice and token shells rather than widespread demand, so it's unlikely to spike unless a high-profile Carrion deck goes viral.
