Caregiver lets you redirect damage from your creatures or yourself by tapping and paying one white mana per prevention shield — useful in decks that generate disposable creatures and need to protect a key permanent or keep a life total stable. The activation cost is real, and the effect is narrow enough that Caregiver earns a slot only when your deck is deliberately built around it.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t

In Commander, Caregiver is a niche include in white token or cleric-tribal decks that can flood the board and want a damage-prevention outlet — think sacrifice-loop strategies where the tap cost is trivially met by expendable bodies. Legacy, Vintage, and Modern allow it, but Caregiver has never seen competitive play in any of those formats; damage prevention at this rate is not where those formats spend their mana. Pauper is the one other format worth a mention, since common-legal white decks sometimes want incremental protection effects at low entry cost, though Caregiver still sits on the margins there.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Caregiver is deep bulk — you're picking it out of a common box, not buying it. Price stability is irrelevant at this tier; it will stay a nickel indefinitely because demand is too thin to move it.
