Brightflame card art
Brightflame kills a creature and gains you life equal to its toughness — two effects stapled together at four mana in Boros colors. The cost is real: sorcery speed and a restrictive double-white, double-red pip requirement keep it out of most Commander 99s, but Firesong and Sunspeaker turns every point of that lifegain into a Lightning Bolt, which changes the math entirely.

Firesong and Sunspeaker converts Brightflame's lifegain into direct damage, meaning a single resolved Brightflame can trade a creature, pad your life total, and ping an opponent for the same amount — all at once, making it one of the few targeted removal spells that doubles as a reach spell in that deck.

Brightflame is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees essentially no play outside Commander. In Legacy and Vintage, four mana at sorcery speed for a single removal spell is nowhere near competitive. Modern has Path to Exile and Fatal Push; Brightflame's lifegain rider doesn't come close to justifying the cost differential. In Commander, it occupies a narrow but real niche in lifegain-payoff decks — specifically those that care about the source of the lifegain being a spell, where Brightflame's hybrid identity lets it slot into Boros, mono-white, or mono-red strategies that need removal which also fuels their engine.

Price Context

Current price

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Brightflame is deep bulk — pick it up without hesitation if it fits your list. Demand is narrow enough that the price is unlikely to move in either direction, so there's no urgency and no risk.
