Break Down card art
Break Down discards a card to put an Aura from your graveyard onto any creature — a free, instant-speed recursion staple for Aura-matters strategies. At zero mana cost beyond the discard, the only real question is whether your deck has enough Auras to loop it, and the answer in dedicated Aura shells is almost always yes.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Dogmeat, Ever Loyal

Dogmeat, Ever Loyal

48.4% of decks · synergy 0.47

Dogmeat, Ever Loyal mills Auras directly onto the battlefield or into the graveyard on attack, making Break Down a free way to rebuy those same Auras the moment anything removes them — the engine is discard-to-recur, and Dogmeat feeds both halves.

02
Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy

Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy

23.9% of decks · synergy 0.24

Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy cares about Auras and Equipment entering the battlefield, so Break Down's ability to snap an Aura back at instant speed means every removal spell your opponent fires is also a trigger for Gimbal's artifact-token production.

03
Preston Garvey, Minuteman

Preston Garvey, Minuteman

16.2% of decks · synergy 0.15

Preston Garvey, Minuteman produces token creatures whenever you cast an Aura, and Break Down bypasses casting entirely — but the tokens and the recursive threat of re-equipping fallen Auras still make it a reliable utility piece in his builds.

Break Down is a Commander card through and through — its value scales directly with how many Auras are cycling through your graveyard, which is a condition that plays out over a full multiplayer game rather than a quick two-player race. In Legacy and Vintage, where it's technically legal, zero-mana instant-speed Aura recursion simply isn't relevant in any competitive shell, so it sees no real play there. Oathbreaker shares Commander's slower, synergy-focused pace, and Break Down earns its slot in any Aura-heavy Oathbreaker build for the same reasons it does in Commander.

unknown tier

Pricing data for Break Down isn't available at the moment — check TCGPlayer or Scryfall for a current market price. Given its narrow application in Aura-matters Commander decks and its origin in a Universes Beyond product, expect it to sit in the bulk-to-low-value range unless demand from Dogmeat builds keeps it elevated.
