Brain in a Jar

In Commander, Brain in a Jar is a niche but legitimate engine in spell-heavy blue builds, particularly those running instants and sorceries with mana values clustered in the 3–5 range. The counter accumulation is slow enough that it demands either a dedicated strategy or cards that add counters at scale — dropping it into a random blue deck and hoping it works is not the play. In competitive non-rotating formats like Legacy and Vintage, the artifact sees essentially no play; those formats have faster and more reliable ways to cheat mana costs. Modern and Pioneer offer more forgiving environments, but Brain in a Jar has never found a competitive home there either — it's too slow for the threats those formats apply. Commander remains the format where the card is actually worth discussing.
