Boros Mastiff is a 2/2 with lifelink and battalion for three mana — acceptable stats, marginal ability, no competitive home. Unless you're building deep into an aggressive Boros go-wide strategy and need the fifteenth attacker, there are better options at every point on the curve.

Boros Mastiff is a bulk common, and that's exactly where it plays. In Commander, a vanilla-adjacent 2/2 lifelinker for three does nothing at a table of 40-life opponents running board wipes. Pauper is the only format where Boros Mastiff has a theoretical home — aggressive white weenie or Boros battalion lists occasionally want every cheap lifelink body they can get, and the common restriction levels the field enough that 2/2s earn their slot. In Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage, the card doesn't register; the competition at three mana is simply too deep.
